To provide the right support, we understand how the Norwegian school system works. Education in Norway is compulsory for all children aged 6 to 16 and is completely free. The system is divided into three levels:
- Barneskole (Primary School, Grades 1–7): Children aged 6 to 12. No formal grades are given. Focus is on building foundations in Math, Norwegian, English, Science, and social skills.
- Ungdomsskole (Lower Secondary, Grades 8–10): Children aged 13 to 16. Students receive grades on a 1 to 6 scale for the first time. These grades affect placement in upper secondary school. This is where extra academic support becomes most important.
- Videregående Skole (Upper Secondary, Grades 11–13): Ages 16 to 19. Students choose between general studies (academic track) and vocational training. Grades here determine university admission.
Norwegian students do not receive formal grades until Grade 8, which means many parents only realize their child needs extra support when academic pressure suddenly increases. This is exactly why ungdomsskole tutoring is so valuable – getting help during Grades 8 to 10 can make a huge difference. Similarly, videregående tutoring helps older students maintain strong grades for university applications. Starting tutoring early, even during barneskole, builds strong foundations that make the transition to ungdomsskole much smoother.
Our tutors also work with students at international schools across Norway – including Oslo International School, Bergen International School, and Trondheim International School – covering IB, IGCSE, and other international curricula.
For detailed information about the Norwegian education system and curriculum, you can visit the official Norwegian Directorate for Education and Training (Utdanningsdirektoratet) or the Eurydice overview of education in Norway. These resources provide comprehensive details about the curriculum, grading standards, and educational policies that our tutors are trained to work with.
The Norwegian education system values equality, inclusion, and individual development. Schools encourage independent thinking rather than rote memorization. Our tutoring approach complements this philosophy perfectly. We do not drill students with repetitive exercises. Instead, we teach them how to think through problems, apply concepts in different contexts, and develop the confidence to tackle new challenges on their own. This means the skills your child builds with our tutors transfer directly into better performance at school.
